Staff leave

It’s holiday time! Hurrah!
Don’t forget to record staff leave – you’ll want to keep their balances up to date. You may need to know for workers compensation purposes too.
Public holidays don’t count in leave balances, you need to pay staff for any day they would usually work. For most businesses this will be Friday 25th December, Monday 28th December and Friday 1st Jan, if your staff usually work on Saturday, then you’ll need to pay them for Saturday 26th December too.
Part time staff have standard days and hours – they might work 10-3 Monday to Friday or they might work Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, you’ll need to pay them for any public holiday that falls on a day they usually work.
What if your staff don’t have enough leave available to cover the whole of the Christmas closure? You’ll need to decide if they take leave in advance or leave without pay. Both options have fine print. Make sure you understand them!
If we usually process wages for your staff, please let us know your office closure dates and we’ll let you know if there are any issues with leave balances, explain the fine print and discuss your options with you. Don’t leave it until the last minute – staff will want to know if they need to take unpaid leave!
