April – June 2023 super is due now

Any unpaid April-June super contributions must be received (by fund) by 28th July.

Payments should be authorised right now as it can take several days to process.

Late payments of superannuation require a Super Guarantee Charge (SGC) statement to be submitted to the ATO. The payment will not be tax deductible to your business.
If you are a director of a company, you need to pay the SGC in full by the due date. If you do not, you’ll be liable for a penalty equal to the unpaid amount, so prioritise this over any other payment.

Fairwork update – unpaid parental leave

Fair Work has updated the rules about unpaid parental leave.
From 1 July 2023, the Fair Work Act includes greater flexibility for employees taking unpaid parental leave. This change is to align with updates made to the Paid Parental Leave scheme from 1 July.

Paid Parental Leave

Changes have come into effect from 1st July 2023.
It’s up to your employee to apply for Parental Leave Pay through Services Australia and work out leave arrangements with you.
Parental Leave Pay helps eligible working parents take time off to care for a newborn or recently adopted child. If you need to provide Parental Leave Pay we give you the funds to pass on to your employees. You should provide the funds in the same way you pay their salary or wages.

Instant Asset Write Off 2023

The Instant Asset Write-Off will replace Temporary Full Expensing on 1st July 2023.
ATO says: Small businesses will be able to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets costing less than $20,000 that are first used or installed ready for use between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024.
Ask your tax agent to explain how to apply the rules to your situation, they are the only people who can legally advise you about tax deductions. And speak to them before you commit yourself and your business to large expenses.

Reconciliations need to be completed to make sure all payroll info is correct before submitting anything to the ATO.

We’re seeing reports of scam emails with fake payslips for employees.
The easiest way to prevent employees clicking on hoax emails (and scammers getting access to your system), is not to send payslips by email.
XeroMe is available, for free, for all employees. They can access payslips, submit leave requests and check annual leave balances, and submit timesheets (if you use them).
